JULIA MORIZAWA’S SHORT FILM PLAYS SEPTEMBER 15-21, 2023 @ 1 PM
The cinemas known as Laemmle, (“LEM-lee”), were founded in 1938 by the nephews of legendary Universal Pictures founder Carl Laemmle and his family has been serving millions of movie-goers in the Los Angeles area for some 75 years. In addition to the latest Hollywood blockbusters, they also proudly screen “great independent, foreign, and art house” projects, and are committed to exhibiting “‘quality film without regard to genre or provenance.’”

Given that storied history and their esteemed reputation, we’re honored to announce that DRAGONFLY — a short film written, produced, and directed by Julia Morizawa, with animation created by Maria Marta Linero and RolyPoly Animation — will be shown at Laemmle’s Monica Film Center, (1332 2nd Street, Santa Monica), as part of their “Shorts by the Sea Vol. 5” program, September 15-21, 2023, at 1 PM.

Inspired by the life of Julia’s grandparents — who were subjected to the Tokyo Firebombing of March 9-10, 1945 — this unique work addresses “the generational trauma of war, the power of family, and finding the strength to rise from the ashes.”
