CHARGED WITH 98 COUNTS OF HATE CRIMES AND OTHER OFFENSES

KILLED ONE PERSON AND ATTEMPTED TO KILL 44 OTHERS

On May 15, 2022, a Nevada man (69) entered an Irvine Taiwanese Presbyterian Church (Southern California) and killed one person and attempted to kill 44 others using “firearms and explosive devices.” (In addition to that fatal shooting, five others were injured by gunfire.)

Motivated by the victims’ “national origin and religion,” the shooter reportedly wanted to obstruct the “victims’ religious exercise.”

Under a year later, on May 11, 2023, the man was charged with 98 counts of federal hate crimes and other offenses and faces the death penalty or the possibility of life-in-prison without parole. (He remains in custody pending state charges.)
