DOLLAR GENERAL WILL PAY A FEW DOLLARS

COMPANY SETTLES PREGNANCY DISCRIMINATION CLAIM FOR $42,500

Dollar General, operated by Dolgencorp, LLC., has agreed to pay $42,500 to settle a pregnancy discrimination lawsuit which had been filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).

Apparently, the company fired a sales associate after she informed management that she was pregnant. While the individual reassured the manger that she could continue working, the manager refused to let her work, and later terminated her for “health reasons.”

Since conduct was believed to violate Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the EEOC filed suit (Civil Action No. 2:22-cv-00198-RWS-JCF) in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, Atlanta Division, seeking monetary damages and injunctive relief.

In addition to the cash payment, Dollar General has agreed to revise its policies and practices and will provide training on the requirements of federal law.

In a written statement, Marcus G. Keegan, regional attorney for the EEOC’s Atlanta District Office, noted, “We hope this case conveys the seriousness of pregnancy discrimination allegations to employers …. The Commission will continue to seek policy changes, training, and reporting in cases like this to protect employees and applicants from facing pregnancy discrimination in the future.”

Were they expecting a different result?
