DISCLOSED HIGH-RANKING GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL'S TAX RETURN

ALSO SHARED TAX DATA FOR SOME OF THE NATION’S WEALTHIEST INDIVIDUALS

CL (38), an IRS contractor from Washington, D.C., pleaded guilty on October 12, 2023, to “disclosing tax return information without authorization.”

Apparently, the guy accessed and disclosed “private tax information” of a “high ranking government official,” and “related individuals and entities,” and released same to a news organization, which led to a series of articles.

He is later said to have purloined the tax data belonging to “thousands of the nation’s wealthiest individuals,” which led to some 50 news articles about that information. (He then subsequently obstructed the investigation of his misconduct and deleted stolen data.)

In a written statement, Attorney General Merrick B. Garland noted that, “By using his role as a government contractor to gain access to private tax information, steal that information, and disclose it publicly, [CL] broke federal law and betrayed the public’s trust …. In every case, the Department of Justice is committed to following the facts wherever they lead and holding accountable those who violate our laws.”

With sentencing scheduled for Jan. 29, 2024, CL faces up to five years in prison

Bet they’re writing articles about that.
