Dear Lucas,
It can be a real slog to get through my inbox these days. All those news
clips about polls. All those obnoxious requests to
contribute $5 to help fund my own grassroots machine
(yes, I get them, too).
And, once in a while, an email like this gets forwarded my way:
SUBJ: Say Goodbye to Al Franken
This week we are launching our next round of Independent Expenditure ads
in Minnesota to Defeat Al Franken.
Oh, great.
You know we can’t let these new ads go without a strong grassroots response.
Can you contribute $5 toward our $350,000 October goal?
That email was sent by a group called the “Conservative Campaign Committee,” and it’s full of cheery information like:
Our latest ad buy comes on the heels of brand new polling data which shows
that Al Franken is in trouble in his re-election bid for U.S. Senate in
Minnesota:
And:
The changing dynamics of this race has compelled Roll Call to now move
Franken to #10 on the Most Vulnerable U.S. Senators who are up for re-election.
And:
Here's the good news: New polls show Franken is in serious trouble
and might lose his re-election bid.
You get the idea. And I bet you know what I’m about to say next:
These outside groups are a real threat in the final days of this election
-- unless we’re prepared to fight back against their attacks.
Please click here to help us reach our very last monthly fundraising goal
of the campaign by contributing $5 right now!
I know that this email barrage is no fun -- whether it’s coming
from me or from one of these special interest groups devoted to defeating me.
But what
will be fun is winning. And you can make that happen.
Thanks,
Al
P.S.: Here’s another line from the “Conservative Campaign
Committee” email, in case you didn’t get the gist of their
message: “Al Franken must be defeated.” And here’s another
line from me, in case you didn’t get what
I was driving at in
my email:
