WHAT SMOKING DOES

Seeing what smoking does

From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.

Smoking leads to lung cancer, other kinds of cancer, and heart disease. But that’s not all it does. Smoking also raises the risk of gum disease, tooth loss, and preterm birth. Those facts are buried in tobacco industry promotions. But they are front and center in a high-impact ad campaign by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The CDC is launching a new wave of its "Tips from Former Smokers" TV spots. The spots show real people who have to live with what smoking left them.

The CDC’s Tim McAfee:

“Tobacco marketing conjures images of glamor, of freedom, and vitality. But Tips from Former Smokers pulls back the curtain and reveals the reality of smoking: addiction, painful disease, and loss of loved ones.’’
