About Colleen Hanabusa
Congresswoman Colleen Hanabusa is running for U.S. Senate in Hawaii to fill the remaining term of Sen. Daniel Inouye, who died in December. Hanabusa will face Brian Schatz in the August primary. Schatz was appointed to Inouye’s seat. The winner of the primary is all but guaranteed the seat, given Hawaii’s heavy Democratic tilt.
A Waianae native and University of Hawaii alum, Colleen’s great grandparents emigrated from Japan to work on Hawai’i sugar plantations — she’s always had working families in her heart.
After building a successful law practice as a labor rights attorney, Colleen won election to the State Senate where she quickly earned the respect of her peers who elected her chair of both the Judiciary and Hawaiian Affairs committees. She was later elected Majority Leader before becoming the first woman to serve as President of the State Senate. As President she stood up to the Republican governor on civil liberties and public health.
In 2010 Colleen defeated Republican Charles Djou to put Hawaii’s first Congressional District back in Democratic hands. In Congress, she has been a champion for education, reproductive choice, and civil rights.
