About Judge Anil C. Singh:
Judge Anil C. Singh has the requisite judicial and legal experience, temperament, and integrity to be an outstanding Supreme Court Justice. Accordingly, he has been reported out "most highly qualified' by two consecutive New York County Democratic Independent Judicial Screening Panels in 2010 and 2011.
The diversity of Judge Singh's life and work experiences have given him greater insight into the role the courts must play in today's challenging times, and has deepened his conviction in the enormous capacity of the judiciary to make a positive contribution to society by finding fair resolutions to disputes.
Judge Singh was born and raised in India, his father's country. As he grew older, he became increasingly aware of the economic, ethnic and religious conflicts that permeate daily life in India and fuel injustice. He began to question the system of laws in India and the weakened judiciary, which was ineffectual in addressing such injustices. This experience formed the beginning of his longstanding commitment to justice. In 1976, he came to the United States, his mother's country, to attend college at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, near his grandparents. And, in 1986, he received a degree from Antioch School of Law in Washington, DC.
After law school, he worked as a law clerk to the Hon. Alice Schlesinger in both the Civil Court and the NY Supreme Court. During those years, he also took an active role in the community as a member of the Board of Directors, as well as co-Chair, for Battered Women's Legal services Advisory Council at Sanctuary for Families, which provides shelter, counseling and legal services to battered women and their children.
In November 2002, Judge Singh was elected to Civil Court, county-wide,as the first South Asian judge in the State of New York. He was designated as an Acting Supreme Court judge, effective April 2010, handling both Supreme Court and Civil Court cases. In the Civil court he presided over cases involving credit card debt and in Supreme Court residential mortgage disclosures, and guardianship proceedings brought on behalf of vulnerable citizens, cases that require great patience and understanding. In January 2011, he was designated as the presiding Judge of Individual Assignment Part 61, where he has a general caseload of tort and commercial matters, and proceedings seeking equitable relief.
As a judge, he strives to apply the law with intellectual acuity and compassion. He approaches tasks with an open mind and empathy, and is always mindful that his primary responsibility is to ensure that all parties receive a fair trial from an impartial decision-maker. While decision making requires detachment, he never forgets that as a judge he is a member of the community and is interested in the welfare of his fellow citizens. No matter how big or small, he is mindful that the problems our citizens face are important, and his decisions have impact on their lives.
Judge Anil Singh has the commitment to justice with the experience and compassion we need on the Supreme Court of the State of New York.
