Florida Orca Protection Act: End Captivity

The Animal Rights Foundation of Florida, the Animal Legal Defense Fund and a coalition of animal protection, environmental, and marine conservation groups are fighting for legislation that would end orca captivity in Florida.

The Florida Orca Protection Act would outlaw holding any additional orcas in captivity in Florida. It would also prohibit breeding captive orcas or transporting them out of state, unless to a seaside sanctuary. Orcas already held captive in Florida will be grandfathered in under the new legislation. It’s a commonsense law that codifies SeaWorld’s previous commitment to end breeding orcas and phase out orca performances by 2019.

You Can Help
In early May, Florida State Representative Thad Altman sent a letter to the Chair of the House Subcommittee of Natural Resources & Public Lands, Representative Holly Raschein, requesting a workshop hearing on this bill. This workshop is a crucial step in passing the Florida Orca Protection Act and we need your help to make it happen.

The Florida House of Representatives needs to hear from YOU that the breeding and forced performance of orcas is not acceptable!
