Lucas -- I wanted to reach out to you today about an issue that is deeply important to me.
Extreme Republican gerrymandering has created unfair representation across the country. We deserve to have confidence in our democracy. But right now, that’s a struggle.
Republicans worked to control the redistricting process in 2010. Instead of people electing their representatives, representatives chose who was in their district -- creating a cycle of Republican advantage.
I’m so upset about this -- and I know you are too, Lucas. Republicans are now responsible for creating some of the most gerrymandered districts in history. And if given the chance, they will do so again. We have to stop them. Here’s how:
The National Democratic Redistricting Committee will be a multi-pronged, 50-state effort. We will take unfit maps to court and fight for public ballot initiatives on unfair redistricting. In addition, we are going to build our party from the grassroots up, focusing on key local and state races.
It is up to each and every one of us to fight for a fair playing field that returns the power of decision making to the people, not politicians. Our rights to vote and be represented equally are under threat.
