WINE TASTING WITH RORY

Dear Friends,

I'm writing to invite you to my home for a wine tasting in support of Council Member Rory I. Lancman, the chairman of the Committee on Courts & Legal Services and a Vice-Chair of the New York State Democratic Party, on Wednesday, January 4th at 7:00 p.m. See the attached invitation.

Before Rory's election to the City Council in 2013, and during his previous three terms in the New York State Assembly, Rory practiced law on the side of plaintiffs in employment, product liability and shareholder litigation. This advocacy helped shaped his agenda as a public official, and Rory has developed an impressive body of accomplishments fighting for the rights of regular people to live and work in dignity and security.

As chair of the Committee on Courts & Legal Services, Rory has focused attention on the many flaws and inequities of our civil and criminal justice system, including having held hearings on and achieved reforms to our bail system, which punishes too many New Yorkers for being poor; our summons courts, where hundreds of thousands of 'broken windows' offenses are adjudicated every year with little regard to guilt or innocence; our system for diverting human trafficking victims from the criminal justice system, instead of treating them as criminals; and disability access in our courts, so every New Yorker navigating our legal system is treated with respect. Additionally, Rory's committee has overseen the largest expansion of civil legal services funding in New York City's history, giving real meaning to the notion that everyone is entitled to their day in court.

As an Assembly Member from 2007-2012, Rory chaired the Subcommittee on Workplace Safety and brought much needed attention to issues of critical importance to working people, including workplace violence, safe patient handling, construction safety for undocumented workers, and security for hotel employees.

Rory has been the kind of consistent, outspoken, independent advocate for civil rights and liberties we need more than ever, and I hope you will join me to support Rory and help him rise to greater positions of responsibility in our city and state. Please RSVP to gottlieb0608@gmail.com.

Looking forward to seeing you. Feel free to invite your friends but please RSVP so we have enough wine for everyone.
