MAKING THE RICH PAY

Lucas -

Earlier this week I made a trip to Albany to talk with the New York State Legislature about the state budget. While I was there, I advocated strongly for a "mansion tax" on the sale of New York City homes, but only when they sell for $2 million or more. I want to tell you a little bit about why this idea is important, and then ask you to make your voice heard on this issue.

As a starting point, I think most of us can agree that the rich do not pay their fair share in this country. Add to that the fact that the wealthiest among us are almost certain to get a significant tax break in the first few months of the Trump Administration, likely paid for in part by federal budget cuts to affordable housing. That means identifying local revenue sources for affordable housing preservation in New York City is paramount.

So during testimony before the New York State legislature, I argued for an extension and deepening of the millionaire’s tax. But I also expressed my desire to pass the mansion tax with the revenue being used to ensure 25,000 New York City seniors have access to affordable housing.

Some Republicans are calling the idea of taxing the rich a "non-starter." But I remember them saying the same thing about universal pre-K and a $15 minimum wage. I think we’ve proven what’s possible when people make their voices heard. That’s why I want to ask you today:

Sign my petition calling on the New York State legislature to pass a "mansion tax" to help ensure 25,000 seniors have access to affordable housing. Your voice can make a real difference in this debate.

Income inequality is the moral crisis of our time. And at a time Congress is talking about cutting funding for health care, public education, and housing in order to pay for tax cuts for the rich, it’s up to us to take action locally. That’s why adding your name is so important.

In solidarity,

Bill de Blasio
Mayor, New York City
