Shark finning is a wasteful and inhumane practice in which a shark’s
fins are cut off and the body is discarded at sea. Unable to swim, the
sharks either drown or are eaten by predators. Fins from up to 73 million
sharks end up in the global fin trade every year.

When shark populations plummet, other species can suffer from a ripple
effect, or what scientists call a “trophic cascade.” The overfishing
of North Carolina’s blacktip sharks led to their main prey, the
cownose ray, to surge in numbers. As a result, the unchecked rays greatly
diminished scallop populations — which in turn, reduced water quality
and led to algae blooms and dead zones.
While shark finning is illegal in American waters, fins are still bought
and sold in the United States. A nationwide ban on the sale of shark fins
is the best way to ensure that the U.S. is not supporting shark finning
and protect sharks around the world.
