On average, a woman working full-time, year round makes 80 cents for every dollar a man is paid for similar work. However, the gender pay gap varies by age and race. The gap tends to be smaller when you are younger – and worse when you're older, which is one of the reasons why women 75 years and older are nearly twice as likely as their male peers to live in poverty. The gap is worse still for women of color.

Even where you choose to live makes a difference. The Joint Economic Committee, of which I am the House Ranking Member, reently released a new report on the gender pay gap. The report found that the gender wage gap is smallest in New York. Here, women are paid 89 cents for every dollar their male counterparts make. Though, we clearly still have work to do if the best circumstance is 89 cents to the dollar.

The gender pay gap is an economic injustice that has a very real impact on the lives of women and families, not just today, but each and every day. This is why I have reintroduced the Equal Rights Amendment and am pushing for passage of the Paycheck Fairness Act to ensure greater financial security for women and families today and for the future. Women deserve equal pay for equal work.

Sincerely,

Carolyn B. Maloney
