IN MEMORIAM: BERT BLITZ

Dear NYSTLA Member,

We are sorry to share the news of the passing of NYSTLA Past President Bert Blitz, Esq. Bert was President of NYSTLA from 1987-1988, and the father of NYSTLA Director Justin Blitz, Esq. and brother of NYSTLA Director Emeritus Arthur Blitz.

Early in Bert’s career, he was a partner with renowned trial attorney Al Julien. Bert was then a partner for many years at Shandell Blitz, LLP until his retirement approximately 10 years ago. During his tenure as a leader at NYSTLA, he helped to found the Big Apple Pothole and Sidewalk Protection Committee. He was committed to justice and always wanted to protect civil liberties. His genuine passion for his craft and his clients will be remembered and missed.

The funeral will be held on Tuesday, September 27th at 10:30am at the Greenwich Village Funeral Home at 199 Bleecker Street. This will be followed by a burial at Mount Moriah Cemetery at 685 Fairview Avenue, Fairview, NJ.

Shiva will be held at the home of Justin and Jordana Blitz (143 West 27th Street, #3F) on Tuesday from 4pm to 9pm, Wednesday from 5pm to 8pm, and Thursday from 4pm to 7pm.

In lieu of flowers, the Blitz family has chosen to honor Bert’s legacy and dedication to the New York State Trial Lawyers Institute by setting up the Bert Blitz Memorial Fund. The Fund will continue his devotion to education and the mission of NYSTLI. To contribute, click here.
