WARREN ON ORLANDO TERRORISM

Lucas,

Sunday’s attack in Florida claimed 49 lives and wounded over 50. This act of terrorism targeted a popular location for Florida’s LGBT community – a place where the community went to feel safe, be accepted, and have fun.

Over the next several weeks, I hope that we continue our national conversation about terrorism, anti-LGBT bigotry and hate, as well as gun violence – specifically closing the terror gap to keep guns out of the hands of those on terror watch lists.

There are also so many ways we can come together right now to help the victims and their families:

As we celebrate LGBT Pride Month, it is impossible to ignore the bigotry that still exists in our country. It is important that we remember that hatred or violence targeting any community – whether based on religion, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, or anything else – is a betrayal of our values as Americans.

Our thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones. We also pray for a quick recovery for all those who have been injured and extend our heartfelt gratitude to the law enforcement officers and first responders in Orlando.

Thank you,

Elizabeth
