READ THIS OVER THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND

Dear Lucas-

As we get ready for the long weekend, I’d like to urge you to take a moment over the next few days with your family to re-read and reflect on one of the documents upon which our great nation is built.

Whether you choose the Declaration of Independence, the Declaration of Sentiments, Bill of Rights, Gettysburg Address, or another one from the canon, the important thing is that you pause and think about how far we’ve come, where we are, and where we need to go.

I’m proud to represent a borough that epitomizes the American dream. We are what the founders envisioned when they made their plans for America, and we are fortunate that so many people from around the world choose Queens to pursue their dreams.

As a single mom raising children in the very same home I grew up in, it’s hard to imagine what it must be like to leave everything behind to start a new life in a new land. And yet people do. Every day.

People come to Queens from around the world where they work hard, start businesses, broaden our palates and enrich the fabric of our cultural community.

All because "we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all people are created equal and endowed with the unalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness".

Thank you for being part of this wonderful community. Have a happy Independence Day!

Sincerely,

Melinda Katz
Queens Borough President
