Our rights to free speech and protest are facing new threats with an incoming
Trump administration.
Trump wants to sue and ban news organizations that criticize him, and
has joked about hospitalizing people who protest him. That's what
fascist dictators do. This is a time for us all to fight to protect the
First Amendment, which is fundamental to democracy.
Sign the petition now to protect and defend the First Amendment. Become
a co-signer of the pledge to preserve our right to a free press, to engag
e in dissent, to practice religion, and to express our opinions.
We cannot stand by while people threaten to criminalize dissent. Just
yesterday, Trump
tweeted "Nobody should be allowed to burn the American flag - if they do,
there must be consequences - perhaps loss of citizenship or year in jail!"
Throwing around unheard-of penalties -- for what is actually legally protected
speech -- is mind-boggling.
Already activists have been facing surveillance and crackdowns from law
enforcement. Imagine what could happen under a Trump administration. We
must do all we can to resist, and protect our rights.
We must also speak out to reject the bigotry and hate that risk creating
a widespread and alarming chilling effect on freedom of expression for
people of color, Muslims, Jews, disabled people, immigrants, LGBTQ people,
and women.
