KILLED HER PASSENGER

DA VANCE: DRIVER CHARGED WITH MANSLAUGHTER FOR FLEEING POLICE AND CAUSING THE DEATH OF HER PASSENGER

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., recently announced the indictment of TIFFANY ALLEN, 25, for leading police on a high-speed pursuit in Washington Heights which ultimately led to the death of the car’s passenger. The defendant is charged in a New York State Supreme Court indictment with one count each of Manslaughter in the Second Degree, Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in Motor Vehicle in the First Degree, and Reckless Driving.[1]

“Tiffany Allen’s alleged recklessness, which included fleeing police and speeding through multiple red lights, endangered the lives of countless New Yorkers, and resulted in the death of her passenger,” said District Attorney Vance. “We must ensure that our city streets are safe for drivers and pedestrians alike, and today’s indictment sends a clear message to those who are careless and foolish behind the wheel: If you disobey our traffic laws, there are serious consequences for your actions.”

According to court documents and statements made on the record in court, at approximately 4:30 a.m. on June 29, 2015, ALLEN was driving a Honda with one passenger, Shawnique Hills, 41, near West 176th Street and Broadway, when police officers in an unmarked car attempted to stop her for a routine traffic infraction. When police activated their emergency lights, the defendant drove away, speeding through several red lights and, at one point, driving the wrong way down a one-way street. As she approached the intersection of West 157th Street and Amsterdam Avenue, ALLEN once again drove through a red light, at which point another vehicle with the green light struck the Honda’s passenger side. Ms. Hills was taken to New York-Presbyterian/Columbia Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. ALLEN was also treated at a hospital for her injuries.

Assistant District Attorney Shawn McMahon is handling the prosecution of the case under the supervision of Assistant District Attorney Jill Hoexter and Assistant District Attorney John Wolfstaetter, Co-Chiefs of the Vehicular Crimes Unit; Assistant District Attorney Warren Murray, Chief of Trial Bureau 50; and Executive Assistant District Attorney John Irwin, Chief of the Trial Division.

District Attorney Vance also thanked the NYPD, including officers from the 33rd Precinct and the Highway District Collision Investigation Squad.
