Last night's SNL was so pathetic that one almost felt sorry for Mr. Trump (and his daughter).
The show was so poorly written that I completely understood why singer-songwriter "Sia" covered her face for the entire evening .... (Wanted to cover mine.)
Here's some commentary I just received from NILP's Angelo Falcon:
* * *
Following the Trump SNL Show
NiLP Note: Well, to no one's surprise, Donald Trump hosted Saturday Night Live last night to, no doubt, record ratings, as over 200 Latinos were protesting outside. Did Trump's appearance on the show help hs campaign for President or did it just add to his overexposure as his support starts to slide? Did the Latino protesters hurt or help him? Did NBCUniversal make a killing by its on and off again criticism of Trump? Were the Latino groups, including the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, unfairly violating Trump's and NBC's freedom os speech, or raising legitimate concerns? Well, we may have to wait until November to find out.
But last night's show was interesting for revealing how, what otherwise we thought were liberal Whites and Blacks on SNL basking in Trump's celebrity aura while in effect condoning his racist views on Mexicans, Mexico, and immigrants (among other groups). To most Latinos, this put the SNL cast and producers in a new light and raised serious questions about NBCUniversal's (and its parent company, Comcast's) relationship to the Latino community.
Does Trump's hosting of SNL raise questions about the sincerity of many of the Latino organizations who were leading the protest last night, or should they be applauded for taking a stand despite their past support of Comcast? When Comcast bought NBCUniversal, they established nine Diversity Councils to advise them, in their own word, "as the company takes steps to become an industry leader in diversity." One of these is the National Hispanic Advisory Council, which is made up of the following: Gilbert F. Casellas, Chairman, OMNITRU LLC (Chair); Anna Escobedo Cabral, Unit Chief, Strategic Communications, Inter-American Development Bank (Vice-Chair); Guarione M. Diaz, President Emeritus, Cuban American National Council; Varsovia Fernandez, President & CEO, Greater Philadelphia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce; Beni Matias, Filmmaker, Matias Productions (affiliated with NALIP); Janet Murguía, President & CEO, National Council of La Raza; Alex Nogales, President & CEO, National Hispanic Media Coalition; Javier Palomarez, President & CEO, U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce; and Brent A. Wilkes, National Executive Director, League of United Latin American Citizens.
Then there was the disgraceful commentary by the otherwise wonderful actress Eva Longoria, defending Trump's appearance on SNL and criticizing the Latino protesters (joined by conservative columnist Andres Oppenheimer)! This quickly revealed a serious conflict of interest on her part, since she has a show, "Telenovela," premiering soon on NBC! To make things worse, NBC ran an ad for her new show during last night's SNL with Trump! Does this mean that her Latino Victory Project, which she co-founded (and its candidate, Hillary Clinton) also supported Trump's appearance? Most agree that the sister should have just kept her mouth shout on this.
Another issue was the need to hold SNL's advertisers accountable for supporting the Trump Show. I am not sure who would be taking this on at this point but, for the record, these are the companies that had commercials running last night: Microsoft (3 spots) ; Absolut Vodka (2 spots); Activision - Play Station's Call of Duty; Direct TV (2 spots); GE (2 spots); Macy's (2 spots); Nissan (2 spots); Old Navy (2 spots); Unilever - Axe (2 spots); American Express; Audi Q5; Bertolli Olive Oil; Bethesda Game Studios - Fallout; Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa TheBorgata.com; Chase - Radio City Music Hall Christmas Show; HBO - Getting On; Brown-Forman Corporation's Jack Daniel's Gentleman Jack; Netflix - Master of None (damn, Aziz Ansari and Alan Yang, I thought you would be with us!); New York Lotto (Governor Cuomo, wuz up with dat?); Polydor Records - Delirium Music Album by Ellie Goulding; Ramour & Flanigan; Shell; SNY; Spike TV; StubHub; TBS - Full Frontal; Verizon - Droid; and Wonderful Pistachios & Almonds LLC . The ad also appeared for the following movies, NBC shows and plays: MOVIES - 13 Hours; Beasts of the Nation; Brooklyn Fox; Creed; Hunger Games Lions Gate; Love the Coopers; Room; Secret in Their Eyes; Sisters; Spectre; The Night Before; and Trainwreck. NBC shows - Blindspot; Chicago Med; Jimmy Fallon; Seth Meyers, Late Night with; Shades of Blue; Superstore; Telenovela (Eva Longoria's new sow); and The Voice. And PLAYS - A View from the Bridge; An American in Paris; China Doll; School of Rock; Silvia; and The Book of Mormon (2 spots).
So . . . What next?
