GET OUR KIDS OUT OF THE TRAILERS

We need to get our kids, once and for all, out of these trailers that we call classrooms and into real school buildings.

Priority #1 is addressing the critical overcrowding in our schools. Our families deserve better.

Parents, city and elected officials (including School Construction Authority President/CEO Lorraine Grillo, State Senator Jose Peralta, Assemblymembers Michael DenDekker, Jeffrion Aubry and Francisco Moya, and Councilmember Julissa Ferreras) gathered together earlier this month to announce plans to finally and permanently expand capacity that's been decades overdue at P.S. 19Q in Corona, the largest elementary school in New York City.

See below for some recent news reports:

"Overcrowded Corona school will finally ditch decrepit classroom trailers. Borough President Melinda Katz made the announcement on Friday at the school in Corona, which counts more than 2,000 students. About 500 kindergartners and first graders attend class in the rusty trailers, which are rusty and plagued by heating problems." - New York Daily News

"These are familiar issues at dozens of schools across the city, where trailers that were to be a temporary solution have remained in use long after their intended expiration dates. Parents told NY1 horror story after horror story in Spanish about their children's experiences in these trailers." - NY1

"No más educación en trailers. Cerca de 500 niños que estudian en remolcadores serán reubicados en escuelas que se están construyendo a tres cuadras." - Univision 41

"Los trailers escolares son como un parche curita. Puedes hacer que luzcan bonitos, pero nunca serán una solución permanente", dijo Katz, cuyo hijo de seis años asiste a una escuela pública. "Nuestras familias y niños están clamando por mejores recursos." - El Diario

"Classroom trailers are like Band-Aids," BP Katz said. "You can make it pretty, but it’s always a temporary fix and should never be a permanent solution." – The Chief-Leader
