SPOTLIGHT ON: New York City Law Department

The New York City Law Department was established under the Charter of 1849. Directed by the Corporation Counsel, the Law Department oversees most of the City's legal business. This article features some resources in the City Hall Library collection about the Law Department.

Annual Reports of the Law Department present information on activities and accomplishments of the agency and its divisions. The collection includes reports from 1885 to the present, providing background to the researcher who wants to explore the history of the Department.

Fighting for the City: a History of the New York City Corporation Counsel by William E. Nelson chronicles the history of the Law Department. The book begins with a description of the Office of the Recorder in the 17th century, and describes how it evolved into the Law Department. Book subjects include the mission of the agency, Tammany Hall, and the mayors, famous cases and how the Law Department. responded to changing political, economic and social climates.

Annual Report of Workers' Compensation Claims of New York City Employees is published by calendar year. This report provides statistics on all workers' compensation claims that are administered by the Law Department on behalf of many city agencies. It can be used to research claims paid and claims outstanding. Holdings date from 2005 to 2013.
