FACEBOOK FACEOFFS D.A.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s office served Facebook--the online social networking service--with 381 search warrants, demanding information on users who were suspects in a Social Security disability fraud ring.

In an attempt to keep its members’ information private, Facebook challenged that request, but the New York County Supreme Court sided with the District Attorney.

Since the proper way to contest a warrant is to suppress any inadmissible or constitutionally violative information it reveals, the Appellate Division, First Department, was of the view that Facebook couldn’t challenge the warrants before they were executed; particularly given the “legitimate” governmental need to undertake the criminal investigation.

Face that.
