Dear Lucas,
I went on
All In with Chris Hayes on Monday to talk about LGBT bullying and how we must do everything we
can to put an end to it.
If you have a minute in your day, watch the video on our blog.
Earlier this week, the Senate refused to include my amendment to protect
LGBT students from bullying at school in the education reform bill. The
amendment received a majority of support (including several Republicans),
but didn't receive the 60 votes needed to move forward. It’s
so disappointing that the Senate would fail LGBT students and their families
and friends this way.
But we can’t back down now. The bullying of LGBT children has reached epidemic proportions:
- 30% of LGBT report missing a day of school in the past month because they felt unsafe.
- Nearly 75% say they’ve been verbally harassed in school.
- More than 35% report being physically attacked.
I refuse to look the other way while LGBT students are being harassed and
attacked. No child can learn the way he or she should if they are forced to endure
relentless bullying.
Take a few minutes to watch the video and be sure to share with friends
on Facebook. Sign our petition and share that as well. Help us continue
raising awareness about those statistics.
The fight continues. Thank you for joining me.
