14 YEARS FOR MURRAY HILL RAPIST

DA VANCE: MURRAY HILL RAPIST SENTENCED TO 14 YEARS IN PRISON

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., recently announced the sentencing of KEVIN MITCHELL, 34, to 14 years in state prison and 10 years of post-release supervision for raping a 30-year-old woman in her Murray Hill apartment in September 2013. On February 11, 2015, MITCHELL pleaded guilty in New York Supreme Court to the top charge of the indictment against him: Rape in the First Degree.

“This lengthy prison sentence reflects the extremely violent nature of this attack, in which Kevin Mitchell raped a woman in her own home,” said District Attorney Vance. “I would like to thank the survivor for coming forward, and my office’s Sex Crimes prosecutors for ensuring that this predator will serve years behind bars.”

According to the defendant’s guilty plea, court documents, and statements made on the record in court, on September 19, 2013, MITCHELL followed the 30-year-old victim as she returned home to her Murray Hill apartment building at approximately 5:30 a.m. After surreptitiously entering her apartment, MITCHELL threatened that had a gun and would slit her throat, and then proceeded to rape her. The victim called 911 after MITCHELL fled. MITCHELL was apprehended by the NYPD’s Warrant Squad four days later.

Assistant District Attorney Siobhan Carty prosecuted the case under the supervision of Assistant District Attorney Martha Bashford, Chief of the Sex Crimes Unit, and Executive Assistant District Attorneys Audrey Moore, Chief of the Special Victims Bureau, and John Irwin, Chief of the Trial Division.
