A Part of Our World: The 2014 Howard Ashman Award and Cabaret, benefiting GMHC, the nation’s oldest HIV/AIDS services organization.
This year's honoree is Tony Award-winning playwright and librettist
Terrence McNally, whose art and activism have profoundly affected the visibility and understanding
of HIV/AIDS. The Award, named for Ashman who passed away in 1991 due to
complications from AIDS, is given annually to honor theater professionals
who have made a difference in the fight to end the epidemic.
The evening will feature songs with lyrics written by Ashman, from
Little Shop of Horrors and his Oscar-winning work in
Beauty and the Beast and
The Little Mermaid, to lesser known gems. Songs from musicals penned by McNally, including
Ragtime and
Kiss of the Spider Woman, will also be showcased. Through celebrating Ashman and honoring McNally,
the Broadway community will share a critical message: We must never forget
the people AIDS has taken from us, and in that remembrance we must draw
strength and inspiration to keep fighting the epidemic.
