LOWERING DIABETES

Diabetes – steady and high

From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.

The best that apparently can be said about America’s diabetes epidemic is that it’s getting no worse. Researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention saw this in national survey data on about 665,000 adults.

Researcher Linda Geiss:

“After a couple of decades of strong growth, the diabetes epidemic appears to have leveled off or plateaued from 2008 through 2012.”

But Geiss says new cases were rising in some groups, such as Hispanics, and non-Hispanic blacks.

And she says the consequences of diabetes, such as higher risks of blindness, amputation and heart attack, continue.

The findings are in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
