NOT SO FAST!

An abrupt stop sent Ilona O. flying into a bus's windshield.

When Hudson Transit asked for the case's dismissal based on the "emergency doctrine," the Bronx County Supreme Court found in the operator's favor. (Apparently, another vehicle swerved in front of the bus, and came within an inch of its bumper, thus forcing the bus driver to stop in order to avoid colliding with the car.)

On appeal, the Appellate Division, First Department, agreed that the suddenness of the events warranted the case's dismissal -- particularly given Ilona's inability to rebut the facts as presented by the bus company.

Talk about a sudden halt.
