KILLING MINORITIES

Minority suicide

From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.

Researchers can see that, in some minority groups, the risk of suicide stands out. Helping to prevent suicide is one goal of National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month – which is July.

The director of HHS’ Office of Minority Health, Dr. Nadine Gracia, says that, for instance, American Indians and Alaska natives have higher rates, as do Hispanic girls.

“We do see some higher rates in certain conditions. But overall, most of the disparities are actually with regards to accessing care, receiving quality care, and being on treatment that is necessary.”

Dr. Gracia says people who are considering suicide can call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, 1-800-273-TALK, as well as 911.
