IN MEMORIAM: STANLEY PARNESS

Sorrowful announcement is made of the death of the Hon. Stanley Parness, former Presiding Justice of the Appellate Term, First Department. During Justice Parness' 21 years of service as a Supreme Court Justice, he served 18 years on the Appellate Term, First Department, the last four of which were as the Presiding Justice of that court. Justice Parness also presided for 15 years over all tax certiorari and condemnation cases in New York County. Prior to being elected to the Civil Court of the City of New York, he had served as Law Clerk to the Hon. Hyman Korn. Judge Parness was a "Bronx Judge," and very proud of it, but his home away from home was 60 Centre Street and he would invariably open up the courthouse which he loved so much. Following his retirement in 2001 he was Of Counsel at Stroock & Stroock & Lavan LLP .

"Stanley," as he was so widely known, was a sage observer of the human condition, an enormously accomplished jurist, a very quick study and an ever loyal friend to his colleagues on the bench and to all court staff. During his long tenure in the New York State Courts he witnessed many changes in court administration and practice, contributing directly and importantly to so many of them. He was a longstanding member of the Character and Fitness Committee of the Appellate Division, First Department.

Stanley was devoted entirely to his wife Harriet and throughout the years they were truly inseparable.

He is sorely missed.

Funeral Services will be private.

Condolences may be sent to
