SCHUMER ANNOUNCES SOUTHERN TIER COMPANY, SURESCAN CORPORATION, SECURES CRITICAL FED CERTIFICATION FROM TSA FOR ITS INNOVATIVE AIRPORT BAGGAGE SCREENING SYSTEM

Local Endicott Firm, SureScan, Achieves Major Milestone; Transportation Security Administration Certifies Their x1000 Checked Baggage Screening Solution

With Certification, SureScan Is Now Actively Introducing The Product To Domestic And International Airports

Earlier this week, U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer announced that SureScan Corporation, located in Endicott, has received Transportation Security Administration (TSA) certification for its new, innovative checked baggage screening solution, called the x1000. SureScan, developer and manufacturer of the x1000, is actively introducing the product to domestic and international airports. Schumer said this is a major milestone for the company, as it will bring the next generation scanning technology to market, help to keep travelers safe, and support this local firm, which currently employs approximately 30 people in the Broome County and Southern Tier area. This technology provides a high level of detection accuracy for today’s threats and adaptability for tomorrow’s emerging risks. Schumer has long been an advocate for SureScan, its workers, and its detection technology. Schumer visited the SureScan facility in 2003, 2008 and 2010, brought the TSA’s head of procurement to tour the facility, fought for federal funding for the company’s initiatives, and has constantly worked to keep the company top of mind for key officials at TSA and the Department of Homeland Security.

“With this critical federal certification in hand, SureScan and its innovative x1000 baggage screening system will continue the proud history of innovation that is synonymous with the Southern Tier,” said Schumer. “From the days of the Bundy time machine, which revolutionized the information management world as we know it, to the development of this next generation checked baggage screening device, the Southern Tier has shown that it is truly a home to innovation. This certification is great news for SureScan and Broome County, and will better pave the way toward future cutting-edge technology development and jobs.”

Schumer has long been an advocate of the contribution a solution like the x1000, could make to the world of aviation security and threat detection. In 2010, Schumer visited SureScan in Endicott to examine the company’s new, emerging scanning technology. During his visit, Schumer called on the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to provide more funding for research and development as well as ensure that companies like SureScan have the resources needed to promote new forms of innovation and enhanced aviation safety measures. In 2010, Schumer urged President Obama to devote a significant amount of the $1 billion in federal funds to be set aside for security improvements at airports to research and development, to ensure that we have the most cutting edge and effective technology.

Schumer has also worked to raise the profile of the SureScan x1000 and increase funding opportunities to support acquisition of technologies like it. In 2008, Schumer supported a $5 million procurement opportunity for the development and optimization of x1000 for the TSA, and worked to keep the company in the conscience of key decision makers like TSA heads and the Secretary of DHS. Schumer visited the facility in 2003, 2008 and 2010, met with local leaders and even brought a head of procurement from TSA to tour facility.
