WANT HOT FLASHES & NIGHT SWEATS?

Caffeine and night sweats

From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.

An early study indicates caffeine may worsen hot flashes and night sweats for women going through menopause. At the Mayo Clinic, researcher Stephanie Faubion saw this in questionnaire answers among about 1,800 women who went to the Mayo with menopause issues.

“In women after menopause, caffeine intake is associated with more bothersome hot flashes and night sweats.”

Faubion says this doesn’t prove caffeine makes the problems worse, and she can’t tell how much caffeine the women had. But she says women who are bothered by hot flashes and night sweats could try cutting back on caffeine and seeing if it makes a difference.

The study in the journal Menopause was supported by the National Institutes of Health.
