SKIPPING SKIN CANCER

Skip the skin cancer

From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.

Fun in the sun? Sure, if you do it right. But there’s a way to do it so wrong you can get skin cancer. Acting Surgeon General Boris Lushniak says ultraviolet rays from the sun – or, for that matter, indoor tanning – can raise the risk of skin cancer, including the form most likely to kill, melanoma.

More than 5 million people in the United States are treated each year for skin cancer, so Dr. Lushniak has issued a call to action. The actions are easy, too – things like covering up, seeking shade, wearing sunscreen with SPF of 15 or above and re-applying sunscreen as needed.

“Enjoy the outdoors, take care of your skin – protect your skin. And protect the skin of those you love; your kids, your family members."
