WATCH THE BOOZE

Checking the drinking

From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.

Many adults drink moderately and without complications. But for others, alcohol is a problem – and possibly a big problem. The director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, Dr. George Koob:

“Alcohol-related problems, which result from drinking too much, too fast, or too often, are among the most significant public health issues in the United States and internationally.”

Koob says about 18 million Americans have an alcohol use disorder, which covers a range of problems from mild to severe.

No matter how severe the problem may seem, most people with an alcohol problem can benefit from some form of treatment. But Koob says treatment that works for one person may not work for someone else. People should talk to their doctors about what might work best for them.
