THEY WANT A SINGLE-PAYER

Lucas,

In some countries, the idea of insurance companies profiting off the sick and dying is morally repugnant.

But in the United States, where taxpayers contribute more per capita to our health care system than any other country in the world, over 45,000 people are allowed to die each year (one every 12 minutes) because they can’t afford insurance — even after the passage of President Barack Obama’s signature health care reforms.

No one should die merely because health care is too expensive.

Add your name to show support for legislation that would create a universal, single-payer health care system in the United States.

In the U.S. Senate, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has introduced the American Health Security Act (S. 1782).

In the U.S. House of Representatives, Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.) has introduced the Expanded And Improved Medicare For All Act (H.R. 676), and Rep. Jim McDermott (D-Wash.) has introduced the House companion to Sanders’ legislation (H.R. 1200).

Public Citizen and our allies will deliver the petition on Capitol Hill as we visit as many lawmakers as we can in an upcoming lobby day on May 22. The event will be entirely devoted to building momentum for these bills and for a health care system that doesn’t allow anyone to be left out.

President Obama’s health care reform will undoubtedly save lives. But tens of millions of Americans are projected to remain uninsured even after the Affordable Care Act is fully implemented.

Are we a nation that will let the sick suffer — even as the for-profit insurance industry grabs up a growing share of federal health care spending?

Let’s make progress in Congress for a single-payer system that would truly cover each and every American.
