FAMILY READY?

Ready family

From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.

Floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, blizzards – every season is disaster season, so it pays to be prepared, and a federal disaster response expert says this can start with just thinking ahead.

The director of HHS’ National Disaster Medical System, pediatrician Andy Garrett, says that’s notably true for families. He says talking with your family about how to be ready for disaster is among the most important things to do:

“Having the time to speak with your family about where you are going to get together after a disaster, how you are going to find each other and what type of access you are going to have to food and water. These types of things that seem simple today could be impossibly complex after a disaster, when normal resources aren’t available.”

This includes having medical records and any medical supplies you might need.
