BE A GUINEA PIG

Helping to find the cure

From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.

People who are ill can use medical help – but they can provide it, too. Researchers looking for potential new treatments need patients willing to help to advance medical research and possibly benefit from leading-edge medicine by participating in clinical trials.

The need for volunteers is broad, but some people are less likely to volunteer. The director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, Dr. Griffin Rodgers, says African-Americans historically have had low participation. But he says a new study indicates African-Americans have more interest than any other racial or ethnic group.

“Participating in a clinical trial that targets disease and/or risk factors affecting your health may help researchers find better treatments for you, your family, and our community.”
