DON'T BE A HERO

Billie RR., mother of two special needs children, consented to a finding of neglect after she was charged with physically abusing one of her kids and inadequately addressing their needs.

When she completed various parenting programs, the Department of Social Services asked a judge to order that the youngsters be reunited with their mom. But the Cortland County Family Court decided that there had been a "substantial change in circumstances" and refused to return the children to her care.

Since the father provided the kids with a stable home environment, the Appellate Division, Third Department, opted to leave the outcome undisturbed. (It was of the view joint legal custody wasn't an option given the couple's "acrimonious relationship.")
