Earlier this week, Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., announced the indictment of ADRIAN RODRIGUEZ, 39, a former employee at the law firm of Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson LLP (Fried, Frank), for stealing more than $376,000 worth of copy machine toner from two vendors. RODRIGUEZ is charged with two count of Grand Larceny in the Second Degree.[1]
“It may surprise many New Yorkers to learn that there is a black market for office supplies,” said District Attorney Vance. “This defendant didn’t just take a box of Post-it Notes out of the office supply closet – he is charged with making an illegal business out stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars of worth copy machine toner."
According to documents filed in court and statements made on the record in court, RODRIGUEZ worked in the duplicating department at Fried, Frank for approximately 10 years. Between October 1, 2010 and December 13, 2012, RODRIGUEZ is accused of ordering more than $376,000 worth of copy machine toner well in excess of the law firm’s actual usage. The defendant ordered the additional toner from Konica Minolta Business Solution and Ricoh U.S.A., which had contracts with Fried, Frank to provide copy machines and services. RODRIGUEZ resold black ink toner for $10 per box, and color ink toner for $15 per box.
The investigation into this case is ongoing.
In 2011, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office secured a conviction against Marque Gumbs, a former employee at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Midtown Manhattan, for stealing more than $1.5 million worth of printing toner cartridges from the hospital.
Assistant District Attorney Lauren Littman is handling the prosecution of this case, under the supervision of Assistant District Attorney Thomas Wornom, Chief of Special Prosecutions; and Assistant District Attorneys Judy Salwen and Archana Rao, Deputy Chiefs of Special Prosecutions.
Senior Investigator Faith Tuohy and Supervising Investigator Santiago Batista assisted greatly in the investigation under the supervision of the Chief Investigator Walter Alexander.
