That speech destroyed Jimmy Carter's re-election hopes because it made people stop and think about the destruction the President had done to America over the previous four years. It still rings true today.
Reagan's question was so effective because it cut through the noise and clutter of the election and boiled it down to the one big issue that was really at stake.
It's 32 years later and we're faced with another failed liberal president. But the question this year is the same as in 1980.
And the answer this year is an even more emphatic “NO! We’re not better off.”
Right now the airwaves are full of ads featuring Obama and Romney. They all look alike. And they all sound alike. And voters all tune them out.
Our ad forces people to stop and answer the question--YES or NO -- are you better off now than four years ago?
You should know that I’m from Ohio – I was elected statewide as the Secretary of State and the State Treasurer—and this ad is going to win us independent and undecided voters like the ones I had to win in Ohio.
These voters are unhappy with President Obama, but they aren’t going to vote against him until we make them think about how his policies have hurt them personally over the last four years.
They need to understand that President Obama and his failed liberal policies are responsible for their financial pain and America’s stagnation.
Our goal is to run our Reagan ad not just in the key swing state of Ohio, but also in Wisconsin, Florida, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. This ad is the best shot we have at winning swing voters and moving these states into the Republican column.
Having Reagan take on Obama makes crystal clear the parallels between Obama’s failed policies and Carter’s. Consider Obama’s record…
- Gas prices are at record high levels – just like in the 70s.
- Record unemployment – 40% of Americans have dropped out of the labor market because they can’t find work.
- We have a president who“leads from behind” abroad and wants to gut our Armed Forces.
- A sluggish economy that’s growing at less than 2%.
- And to top it off, President Obama tells us this is the best we can do.
That’s just wrong. It’s the best that he can do. But America can do better.
