LIU STATEMENT ON RENT GUIDELINES BOARD VOTE
*****************************************

City Comptroller John C. Liu issued the following statement on this evening's vote by the Rent Guidelines Board:

"It is disappointing that the Rent Guidelines Board refused to consider freezing rents in stabilized apartments for this year.  It is, however, encouraging that the recommended increase is the lowest it has been in at least seven years. The City's unemployment rate of 9.7 percent and shortage of affordable housing mean we must do everything within our power to help hard-hit families keep a roof over their heads."
