THE DOORS

Catherine Koval was walking down a dark hallway and thought she opened a door which led to a bathroom, but ended up falling down a flight of stairs.

When she later filed suit against the homeowner, the Monroe County Supreme Court and the Appellate Division, Fourth Department, thought the perils of walking down an unlit hallway, and through a darkened doorway, were "open and obvious," and dismissed the case. (They noted that Koval had previously managed to find the bathroom without incident and chided her for not making use of the available lights.)

Now was that illuminating.
