HOW SUCCESSFUL WILL SUCCESS ACADEMY BE?

krueger_senate_banner_nyreblog_com_.bmpDear Friends,

I want to make sure you know about an important meeting on Tuesday. The New York City Department of Education is considering applications from Success Academy to open three charter schools in Community School Districts 2 and 4. District 2 contains all of the 26th Senate District, and two of these schools are slated to be co-located in existing public schools.

Next Tuesday the Department of Education will hold a public hearing and present more information on the proposal, and members of the community are invited to attend. I urge all interested members of our community to attend and share their views.

The District 2 Community Education Council is a group I respect and with whom I frequently work, and they have recently passed two resolutions expressing concern about these proposals and opposition to the co-locations. You can read them here:

School co-locations can have major impacts on the public schools involved. The Department of Education, the SUNY Charter School Institute, and SUNY Board of Trustees need to hear from our community throughout the entire decision-making process.

The hearing will be held at 6:00pm on Tuesday (May 1), at 333 Seventh Avenue (between 28th and 29th Streets).

Comment from the public is welcomed at the hearing, but speakers must register. Registration be at 5:30pm. Written comments will also be collected on the day of the hearing. In addition, comments can be submitted before May 21st by email to charters@suny.edu , or by postal mail addressed to the SUNY Charter Schools Institute, 41 State St., Suite 700, Albany, NY 12207.

I urge all interested or concerned members of the community to attend and make their voices heard!

Sincerely,

Liz Krueger
State Senator
