GETTING BIG TRUCKS OFF THE ROAD

public_citizen_banner_nyreblog_com_.jpgLucas,

Every year, about 4,000 people are killed and 100,000 more are injured in truck crashes.

And corporate special interests are pushing to make you share the road with even bigger, heavier and more dangerous trucks.

Make two phone calls today to preserve truck size and weight limits that save lives.

Lobbyists for the trucking industry and giant corporations like Kraft Foods, Nestle and MillerCoors are pushing legislation that would allow trucks to weigh up to 100,000 pounds in every state -- a 25% increase over the current 80,000-pound federal limit.

The bipartisan Safe Highways and Infrastructure Preservation Act introduced in the House (H.R. 1574) and Senate (S. 876) would freeze truck lengths and weights. The bill is similar to a law enacted in 1995 to stop the spread of dangerous triple trailer trucks that was a major truck safety victory.

Tell these key members of Congress to oppose increased truck size and weight limits and to pass the Safe Highways and Infrastructure Preservation Act.
  • Call 202-225-4035 for the office of Rep. John Mica (R-Fla.), chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
  • Call 202-224-4721 for the office of Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.), ranking member of the Senate Committee on Environment & Public Works.

You don't have to be an expert. Just dial the number and tell the person who answers that as an American who cares about safe roads, you want Congress to oppose increased truck size and weight limits and to pass the Safe Highways and Infrastructure Preservation Act.

Make the calls right now!
