THE STAKES COULDN'T BE HIGHER

public_citizen_banner_nyreblog_com_.jpgLucas,

By the tens of thousands, Public Citizen supporters across the country are rising up to confront the threats facing our democracy in 2012.

We all know the stakes could not be higher.

And with only a few days left in 2011, our supporters are rushing their generous year-end contributions to Public Citizen before the clock strikes midnight on December 31.

In case you've ever wondered why organizations such as Public Citizen focus so much on your support this time of year, let me give you a peek behind the curtain.

It's not uncommon for a nonprofit to receive 25% or even 50% of its annual revenue in December.

In 2010, $1 out of every $8 that Public Citizen's supporters contributed online all year came in the final four days of December.

If we can match, or even exceed, that this year, I'll know that Public Citizen will have the resources in 2012 to do all the work we need to do -- all the work that you trust us and join with us to do.

That's why I am counting on you to make a contribution of $10 or more to Public Citizen today.

Public Citizen accepts absolutely no corporate or government funding. Support from engaged and committed people like you is literally what keeps us going.

In 2012, that support will be needed like never before.

The fundamental building block of our democracy -- fair and open elections in which voters, not corporations, determine who represents them -- will be under assault by corporate front groups and Super PACs.

The full impact of the Supreme Court's horrific Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission ruling will be felt in every election, from the campaign for President of the United States down to races for city council.

The millions spent in 2010 by shadowy outside groups -- half of it in secret -- is a drop in the bucket compared to the hundreds of millions Karl Rove, the Koch brothers and others will spend supporting corporate candidates and attacking opponents of the corporate agenda.

And that's not all.

The corporate apologists in Congress will step up their attacks on life-saving health, safety and environmental regulations.

And they'll continue trying to undermine the financial reforms passed last year, including their outrageous opposition to the appointment of a qualified leader for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

But Public Citizen's campaigns to overturn Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, to defeat the attack on regulatory safeguards, to win aggressive implementation of the Wall Street reform legislation, to stop more corporate-friendly, NAFTA-style trade deals -- and much more -- are gaining more and more momentum.

Stand with Public Citizen by making a secure online donation right now.

For more than 40 years, Public Citizen has fought back against corporate greed and refused to accept corporate control of our democracy. The many victories we've won are because people like you believed in the strength of an engaged citizenry.

Together, we are more powerful than any corporate lobbyist, Super PAC or special-interest group.

I want to thank you for all you've contributed by staying informed and taking action as part of our online community. And I want you to know that I'm counting on your generous support at this critical year-end moment.
