STOP THE LAWLESSNESS

public_citizen_banner_nyreblog_com_.jpgLucas,

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled money is equal to speech and that corporations are entitled to the same First Amendment rights as people.

Money is not speech. And, contrary to what Mitt Romney says, corporations are not people.(1)

Meanwhile, those of us without millions of dollars to spend on political campaigns are, in effect, silenced. It is as if we have to speak through kazoos while corporate CEOs speak through megaphones.

That's why we've teamed up with more than a dozen organizations to make yesterday - August 11 - a day of online action: "The Day When $$$$ Equals Speech."

Amplify your voice! Go to the website we set up to make it really easy to participate:

www.dollarsordemocracy.org

Because of the ruling in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, huge corporations can spend unlimited amounts of money to drown out the voices of real people.

People like you and I don't have unlimited money.

But what we can do is type an unlimited number of dollar signs all day long to protest how corporate $$$$ drowns out our voices.

All over the country, people are using Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and other social media networks to show their frustration with the corrupting influence of money in politics.

The more people who participate, the more attention it will generate. But we need YOU to help us amplify the message so the government, the media and the corporate interests know that We, the People, oppose the corporate takeover of our elections.

To participate, all you need to do is fill your social media status update with dollar signs and link to www.dollarsordemocracy.org .

Two examples from past weeks show the stunning lawlessness of election spending in America today:

Last week, it was revealed that a political action committee backing GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney received $1 million from a corporation that suddenly appeared, then was dissolved.

And during recent weeks, Wisconsin's recall elections were deluged with more than $30 million in outside money. This money-drenched election was a preview of what 2012 will look like.

Take action at www.dollarsordemocracy.org .

This day of online action is just the first step. Stay tuned for tools, tips and resources to help you contact, meet and persuade your members of Congress to support legislative solutions and a constitutional amendment to counter the corporate corruption of our government.

Onward!
