Schumer: Chin Possesses the Experience, Intellect and Temperament Necessary to Excel as a Federal Judge

Yesterday, U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer announced New Yorker and Asian-American Denny Chin has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate to serve as a U.S. Circuit Judge for the Second Circuit. Judge Chin is a history-making pick, as he was the first Asian-American appointed to be a U.S. District Judge outside of the Ninth Circuit.  He is now the only actively serving Asian-American judge on the federal appellate bench.  Schumer laid out several reasons Chin will make an excellent jurist on the federal appeals court. Schumer noted Chin's stellar legal background, close ties to New York, even-handedness, temperament, and demonstrated leadership skills will make him a perfect and much-needed addition to the Second Circuit. Schumer also noted that he is highly capable and very qualified for the position.

"Denny Chin's outstanding leadership skills, his commitment to justice, and his extensive experience make him an exceptional choice for a position on the Second Circuit," Schumer said. "He is a brilliant attorney who possesses the knowledge, balanced views and temperament required to serve. I am proud to have nominated and voted for Denny Chin due to his experience, but I am equally proud because of his deep ties to New York and the Asian American community."

Judge Chin was born in 1954 in Kowloon, Hong Kong and moved to the United States in 1956. He graduated in 1971 from New York's Stuyvesant High School. Chin is a graduate of Princeton University and Fordham University School of Law, where he was the managing editor of the Fordham Law Review. Chin clerked for the Hon. Henry Werker in the Southern District.

Chin served for four years as Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. In 1986, Chin began his own law firm, and in 1990 joined another firm where he specialized in labor and employment law and represented employees and unions. In 1994, President Clinton nominated Chin to the United States district court for the Southern District of New York. On October 6, 2009, President Obama nominated Chin to the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
