In the years following 9/11, the Bush administration has been rampant with abuses
of executive power - domestic spying, detainee mistreatment, secret foreign prisons,
and the suspension of habeas corpus. Having abandoned the system of checks
and balances -  one of the defining features of our constitution -
this administration has created a monarchical presidency and undermined our
democracy. The next leader of the United States has the unique opportunity to give
up the almost unlimited authority amassed in the last presidency and restore the
balance of power that is a foundation of our nation. Brennan Center attorneys
will discuss not only the possibilities but also challenges facing the next president.
