11 WAYS TO BE ECO-FRIENDLY

A reader forwarded us a copy of an atrociously hypocritical D.C.-based magazine called " WASHINGTON LIFE ."

The publication bills itself as "Washington's Premier Luxury Lifestyle Magazine." In its April 2008 "Earth Issue," some forty pages are dedicated to "better eco-living."

On page 16, for example, you'll find a column called, " 10 Ways to Go Green ."

Should you be so inclined, here's what Washington Life  suggests we do to save the environment:

  1. Reuse grocery bags.
  2. Bring your own mug to coffee shops or brew "fair trade organic beans."
  3. Remove your name from catalogue (and other) mailing lists.
  4. Replace cleaning products with chemical-free alternatives.
  5. Adjust your thermostat (so less energy is consumed each season).
  6. Buy organic clothing.
  7. Buy energy efficient electronics (and other appliances).
  8. Buy locally-grown organic produce.
  9. Reduce, reuse and recycle.
  10. Use solar power.

We managed to come up with an even better option -- an eleventh way -- all of us can make a difference:

Stop buying stupid newspapers and magazines!

(Read the electronic versions, if you must!)

Washington Life 's publishers can help reduce carbon emissions and stop the wanton destruction of our environment by putting their glossy, monthly rag -- which is neither printed with soy ink nor on recycled paper -- to bed. Permanently!
