THREE CANDIDATES REFUSE TO RETURN UNSPENT PUBLIC FUNDS

According to a press release issued earlier today, the New York City Campaign Finance Board (CFB) denied the petitions filed by three former candidates who were seeking to retain unspent public funds.

Viviana Vasquez-Hernandez, a City Council candidate, sought to keep $10,165. While Margarita Lopez , a candidate for Manhattan Borough President, fought to retain $71,871.  C. Virginia Fields , a candidate for Mayor, was looking to hold on to $337,340.

Although the CFB  refused the three requests, it did reduce Fields' repayment obligation by a whopping $6,920, to $330,420.

What self-respecting, well-intentioned candidate wouldn't want to keep public monies?

It's a move which strikes us as particularly civic-minded.
